26/08/2009 Bunyol`s Tomatina dyes red and fun more than 45.000 attendees
Bunyol has celebrated today its more international party. A total of 125 tons of tomatoe have been distributed among 45.000 people that eagerly screamed “Tomatoe, tomatoe!”. This year, visitors from around the globe had enjoyed the Tomatina from beginning to end. During three days visitors were able to enjoy all sort of activities that anticipated the Tomatina day, which concluded with the launch of a rocket at 11 a.m. Six trucks had started their route throwing tomatoes to the crowd. These tomatoes were picked up, smashed and thrown among the crowd releasing pure adrenaline.
Bunyol´s mayor, Fernando Giraldós, has evaluated this year Tomatina positively “We had a lot of visitors this year, more so than in previous occasions. Everyone had lots of fun and we are looking forward to next year.” The mayor has attributed the high attendance thanks to the coverage received from the media and the internet because they show how entertaining this party is “Tomatina has great repercution in the town thanks to it now Buñol is known all over the world” said Giraldós.
The major is seeking for continuous improvement of the party to offer its attendees better quality and service.
The Tomatina has counted with a large security team of 70 members of the police, 50 security guards, 36 volunteers that helped to clear up the area for the trucks among the crowd and 40 civil guards that ensure the success of Tomatina 2009.
There were also eleven ambulances, an emergency center located in the township hall, 13 Doctors and an emergency helicopter that was ready for any emergency.
The red wave of tomatoes had covered the streets until noon just when the second fire craker indicated the end of the tomatoe battle when no more tomatoes could been thrown. Eventhough, thousands of people had played with the tomatoe juice until the last minute when the streets were about to be clean. The evidence of the tomatoe battle disappear very quickly leaving the town spotless and ready to resume the festivities.
The founder of Kukuxumusu, Mikel Urmeta and its mascot Mr. Tetis, a blue bull came to The Tomatina to participate because a delegation of Bunyol went to the Saint Fermins last July. With this visit Kukuxumusu has closed its celebration of the first edition of the “Jay Day” and initiatieve that wants to promote reputated parties around the world with the aim of promoting them.
More than 50 foreign and spanish communication medias have come to the Tomatina to report in the whole world this big party. Journalists of countries like Australia, Korea, Holland, Russia, Portugal, Denmark, Belgium, United Kingdom, Finland, Norway, Switzerland, Italy and Argentina have caught with their lenses one of the more important Spanish parties.
Yesterday, on Tuesday, the 25th of August, and on the occasion of the Tomatina it was celebrated in Buñol, the international final of Buzz contest! What do you know about your country? From PlayStation. The finalists were competing for managing to demonstrate to be the best of Europe and for the great prize: a Mini car. Finally, in the big competition, the finalist of Switzerland, Armin Diethelm, became the winner. He demonstrated to have the best knowledge of general culture and to be the most skilful with the playstation. Armin has been one of the protagonists of the Tomatina, giving the powerful kick of beginning of the red battle.
At the end of the Buzz contest, started the Festival Non Stop “Radiostars” in the Tomatina Village organized by The Ánimas Group and the radio Máxima Fm.
